Ex HYPERION STORM
Ready for NATO’s Allied Reaction Force
The steady thump of Chinook rotors
echoed across the rain-soaked moorland
of Northumberland as two RAF helicopters
swept low over Otterburn Training Area.
Moments later, Rangers and Royal Marine
Commandos dropped from the aircraft
on ropes, hitting the ground and moving
quickly towards a mock enemy position
It was the dramatic finale to Exercise
Hyperion Storm, which marked the end of 18
months of training, preparation and scrutiny
for the 4 Ranger Special Operations Land Task
Group.
The exercise wasn’t just another training
serial. It was the final hurdle before the UK takes
responsibility for NATO’s Allied Reaction Force
(ARF) Special Operations Land Component –
the first time the nation has taken on the role.
Working alongside the Royal Marines and
supported by RAF aircrew, the Rangers have
spent the last year and a half proving they can
operate as part of a highly capable joint force,
ready to deploy at short notice anywhere NATO
requires.
The road to validation was far from easy.
Operating under the UK’s Special Operations
Component Command (SOCC), every aspect of
the force was examined by NATO evaluators.
More than 850 performance measures had to
be met, with everything from planning and
command to battlefield execution put under
the microscope.
For the soldiers, sailors, marines and aviators
involved, the successful outcome reflected
months of hard work behind the scenes.
The climax of the exercise saw assault
vehicles push forward across the training
area as Rangers and Royal Marines fast-roped
from the hovering Chinooks to secure their
objective. Once complete, the force regrouped,
boarded the waiting helicopters and departed
for RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire.
With the validation now complete, the
Rangers will assume responsibility for NATO’s
Special Operations Land Forces from July,
standing ready to respond to crises alongside
allies across the globe.
