RIFLES IN THE NORTH EAST
AND YORKSHIRE 26
In June, 8 RIFLES, supported by The Band
and Bugles of The Rifles, delivered the
spectacular “RIFLES in the North East (RINY)
and Yorkshire 26”. It was designed to unite
all five pillars of the regiment, and it did
exactly that.
Starting in Doncaster’s historic Market
Square, the performance, delivered precision
and flair by the band and enhanced by the
veteran Minden House Buglers, drew a warm
and enthusiastic response from the local
community.
The following morning the regiment
hosted a Bugle Breakfast at the iconic
Doncaster Mansion House. Bringing together
over 60 regional employers, it reinforced vital
relationships between civilian organisations
and the regiment, particularly its reserve
forces.
The pace continued as the team moved
swiftly to Pontefract Castle, where the
majestic backdrop provided a fitting setting
for another impressive Sounding Retreat.
These Yorkshire engagements held additional
significance, marking the 80th anniversary

of The King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry
being granted the Freedom of both Doncaster
and Wakefield—a poignant reminder of the
regiment’s deep historical roots in the region.
Following a brief respite, the focus shifted
north to the regiment’s heartland in the North
East. Sunderland hosted a superb evening at
City Hall which was impeccably supported by
the Council and demonstrated the enduring
affection for The Rifles across the region.
Saturday brought a fitting finale in Durham.
Collaboration was at the heart of the day,
as The Band and Bugles of The Rifles joined
forces with the Durham Army Cadet Force
Band and Bugles, alongside Durham Music
Services. Together, they prepared a vibrant
concert in Wharton Park.
RINY 26 was, in every sense, a celebration
of music, heritage, and community. Above all,
it reinforced the deep-rooted ties between
The Rifles and the people of Yorkshire and
the North East, ensuring those connections
remain as strong as ever for generations to
come.
