REGIONAL BANDS COLLECTIVE TRAINING
An imposing sight
In April, The Band and Bugles of The Rifles
travelled to Cardiff to take part in the
collective training of the Regional Bands
of The Royal Corps of Army Music. Hosted
at Maindy Barracks, this was a fantastic
opportunity for all musicians of the regiment
to come together to form strong links, foster
camaraderie, and develop our musical skills.
The Rifles Band was divided into four
separate ensembles: Wind, Brass, Big Band,
and Solo Competition Band, with members
split across these groups. After a week
of training, the first performance was the
Regional Bands Solo Competition at Llandaff
Cathedral. Last year’s winner, our very own
LCpl Tom Thorne on percussion, was once
again competing to be crowned. There
was fierce competition, and with the entire
regiment in attendance, LCpl Thorne achieved
a highly commendable third place with his
rendition of Concerto for Marimba and String
Orchestra, Mov III, Rythmique Énergique.
We were privileged to have been chosen to
perform a historic Sounding Retreat at Roald
Dahl Plass, just outside the Millennium Centre
at Cardiff Bay, prior to the Brass Band concert
in Hoddinott Hall. Both events were attended
by local dignitaries, as well as trainees
from the Royal Military School of Music. The
following day, the Wind Band travelled to Elgar
Hall in Birmingham to deliver another fantastic
display of military music at its best.
