In June, the Band and Bugles of The
Rifles embarked on a tour of the North,
engaging with communities in Doncaster,
Pontefract, Sunderland, and Durham. The
band performed three Sounding Retreat
parades over the week in Doncaster Market
Place, Pontefract Castle, and Keel Square in
Sunderland.
All events were very well supported, with
the Lord-Lieutenant from each region in
attendance. The crowds were delighted by
performances of traditional bugle marches
such as The Lines of Torres Vedras and
Bravura, as well as an arrangement of In the
Hall of the Mountain King by Edvard Grieg,
featuring an ever more rapid and exhilarating
accelerando.
A particular highlight was the bugle
platoon’s drill display to the tune of Crazy
Train by Ozzy Osbourne. This fantastic

arrangement was created by two of our very
talented trombone players, CSjt Fomes and
Musn Birch.
The final day of our tour took us to
Wharton Park in Durham for The Rifles
Freedom Concert. We spent the morning
rehearsing with the local RIFLES Cadet Force
Band, as well as musicians from the Music
Service.
The week concluded at Wharton Park,
where County Durham’s proud military
heritage and its historic connection to The
Rifles and The Durham Light Infantry were
celebrated. This also provided an opportunity
for our Bugle Major, CSjt Keely, to perform his
final rendition of High on a Hill as he leaves
The Rifles after an exemplary 24 years of
service.
