RIFLES FAMILY
From solemn acts of remembrance in York Minster and St Paul’s Cathedral to the stirring sound
of bugles in Doncaster and Pontefract, the past months have brought together members of the
forming and antecedent regiments and The Rifles in a series of memorable occasions.
Remembering
Sir John Moore
The fourth annual commemoration
service for Lieutenant General Sir John
Moore was held in the Regimental
Chapel at York Minster (and St Paul’s
Cathedral) that saw veterans from
across the spectrum listen to readings,
and the Minden House Buglers and
witness wreaths being laid.

GOVERNOR’S REVIEW VISIT TO
THE ROYAL HOSPITAL CHELSEA
Robert Smith and Colin Cranswick travelled to the Royal Hospital
Chelsea for the Governor’s Review, held ahead of Founder’s Day.
Despite torrential rain before the parade, the weather cleared as
the Chelsea Pensioners marched on. Afterwards, Robert and Colin
met KOYLI in-patient Phil Watkins before visiting Tony “Big Mac”
McLaughlin, a former Bugle Major who had served with Colin in the
2nd Light Infantry Band and Bugles.
Association members at Memorial Window Service
Memorial Window rededicated to
Lieutenant Robert Abelson Harpley KOYLI
A rededication service was held at St Lawrence’s Church, York, in March, in memory
of Lieutenant Robert Abelson Harpley KOYLI and his family. Lieutenant Harpley served
with the 5th Battalion KOYLI and was killed during the Battle of the Somme on 6 July
1916. The window depicts a soldier crowned with the stars of Heaven, with Amiens on
one side and York on the other.
