SOUTH
100TH BIRTHDAY OF
LT COL (RETD) TONY COLLYNS
A spring Tuesday in Salisbury provided
the perfect backdrop to Lt Col (retd) Tony
Collyns’ 100th birthday party.
Col Tony was surrounded by many family
and friends to enjoy this very special day
and it was a privilege for RHQ to share this
occasion too: Major Claire Hudson (Assistant
Regimental Secretary – Welfare) spoke warmly
to Col Tony and Bugler Tomase ‘Tommo’
Matakibau (5 RIFLES) sounded the Reveille,
providing great linkage to the Regiment of
today.
After leaving Marlborough College in 1944,
he was commissioned into the Somerset Light
Infantry in April 1945, deploying to India. There
aren’t many of this stoic generation surviving;
when we, he was supping a small whisky
and when we left… he was supping a small
whisky – perhaps he’s entitled to enjoy himself
a little. Sláinte.
The Bond of Riflemen –
South Croydon
In April, several veterans from one of the forming regiments
attended the funeral of Martyn L(ofty) Langridge (3RGJ - 19761983). They all happened to be from his platoon, including the
Platoon Commander and the Serjeant who recruited him - this
is pretty special but not unique. Considering he left battalion
over 43 years ago; to have those who served closely with him,
see him off on his final leg, typifies that special bond.
Also of note, a veteran Rifleman present was reflecting on the
day and penned this short poem. He will remain anonymous but
notably had a penchant for riding camels across the deserts in
the Middle East and Far East!
The old soldiers came to bid farewell,
Rifle green blazers and chests of medals,
Proof of service to those who could tell,
Those who stood shoulder to shoulder when duty calls.
The regimental flag draped over the coffin,
A single photograph of a soldier on tour,
Now lying in peace from the bombs and din
Of a soldiering past which is no more.
The bugler plays the haunting notes
As the strains of the Last Post fades away,
Memories of him high around the chapel floats,
Ones, which in his comrades’ minds will always stay.
