WELFARE
Major (Retd) Rory McCaffrey is RHQ Rifles, Regional
Secretary for the South West and has also supported
Mark. Rory writes:
‘Mark Campbell epitomises all that make
us so proud to be Riflemen and a quick
flick through his service records shows
that he took one of the toughest and most
physically demanding paths through his
military career, with time spent as a Sniper
and five years as a Jungle Warfare Instructor,
to note but two very challenging disciplines.
He also excelled at ultra marathon running
and still has that look that if it wasn’t for
MND he would be out running instead of
talking with me!
I first met Mark in May of last year; I was
immediately impressed with his absolute
bearing and positive attitude as well as his
incredible organisational skills (his house
and garden looked like he was ready for COs
room inspection, he was certainly ready for it)
and it was clear that like any good Rifleman
he was in complete control of his immediate
environment, this was not what I expected to
find before I arrived.
I can honestly say that Mark is one of the

£7.22 gross/£5.77 net a month (figures based on a
Rifleman’s monthly salary). Officers, Warrant Officers
and SNCOs pay more.

most impressive Riflemen I have ever seen
facing such adversity, and whilst we would
all like to think that we would cope with
resilience should we face our own storm (and
we will), we never really know how we will
react – but sat in front of me was the absolute
embodiment of someone that was not in the
slightest bit prepared to kneel before it. It is
obvious to anyone that has met Mark, that all
the Rifleman Mark ever was, he still is… and if
anything, I would say he is an even stronger
Rifleman for it – as was I being lucky enough
to meet him’.
In Mark’s own words, ‘It’s been a Journey of
Service, Challenge and Resilience’… Yes Mark it
has, and one that is being run with huge grace
and style!
